WORLD CUP 24 HOURS
Due to the last years European economic crisis, the Portuguese government had to make some cuts in the public health system. In our city that cost us one of the dearest and most important facilities: the maternity had to close!!
Now, there are no more babies born in Torres Vedras. The options are to have a child in Lisbon (50 km distance), Caldas da Rainha (45km distance) or in the highway in an ambulance to one of those two cities.
In order to give some support to new mommies, it was created a center of information and support to fulfill aspects of the pre and post pregnancy. The center asked us for some items they needed in order to open by July. And, we said yes. Of course.
The problem was that we were in June, and had less than a month to create a fundraising event to be able to keep the promise.
So, what kind of event we could perform so quickly and having a lot of people interested with the disadvantage of being summer and everyone just wanted to watch the FIFA World Cup?
Then, it was clear!
We would create our own World Cup! And of course that would catch the attention of the young people born in the country that gave to the world names like Eusébio, Luís Figo and more recently Cristiano Ronaldo.
THE NEXT STEP:
We booked an entire weekend in a sports complex, and schedule a non stop football 24hours matches that would allow 16 teams to play a group stage, and then the quarter finals, mid, final and 3rd place game.
By registration order it would be given a national team to defend (based on the actual FIFA ranking), that means the first team to register would be Spain, than Germany, and so on.
The event was promoted by flyers in every city sport center and on our facebook page (which has more than 3500 followers).
During the event, there was always an audience watching the games, even on the 5 a.m. game.
